The 17th Symposium on Bacterial Genetics and Ecology (in conjuction with the 11th Theodor Escherich Symposium) is organised by the Graz University of Technology, Medical University Graz and University of Graz. The conference will cover microbiology and genetics, and the Conference Chair is Prof. Dr. Gabriele Berg. The conference will be in English.

Biological systems span many levels of organization: from molecules to organelles and cells to the multi-cellular structures of tissues and organs, to whole organisms, and the ecosystems and societies they compose. Organization at all these levels emerges during both evolution and development through the dynamic interactions of system components, giving rise to complex structures and functions. We are only at the beginning of understanding how such levels of organization emerge, and how they self-organize and feed back on one another. Studying and untangling these multi-level interactions requires quantification and modeling approaches that integrate and cross organizational levels. During this lecture course, we will be looking at the emergence and unfolding of multi-level regulatory systems from a transdisciplinary vantage point, drawing from both experimental approaches and theoretical conceptual frameworks to help us understand emergent phenomena.

Spetses Summer Courses are well known for covering various specialized topics within the general field of molecular and cell biology. This FEBS/EMBO Lecture Course is centred on microbiology, which has witnessed a renaissance over the last 20 years. The course will cover different aspects of this “New Microbiology”, including bacterial diversity and evolution, microbial communities and microbiotas, predation and symbiosis, biofilms, host-pathogen interactions, phage biology, bacterial biophysics and cryoelectron tomography.

This ‘FEBS3+ Meeting’, with the motto “Unlocking of the Secrets of Life”, is the XXVIIIth BIOCHEMISTRY CONGRESS of the Czech and Slovak Societies for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, with participation of Polish and German Biochemical Societies.

The thematic focus of the congress is on structural-functional relationships in effector, signaling and regulatory pathways, on biological membranes and cell organelles, traditional topics of energy and substance metabolism with an emphasis on modern knowledge in the field of enzyme catalysis, including its importance for xenobiotic metabolism. Special attention will be paid to novelties in the field of nucleic acids and their components, gene expression, but also epigenetics. We aim at modern approaches in contemporary structural biology in connection with advanced “omics” technologies, bioinformatics and artificial intelligence, as well as “single cell” approaches with advanced high-resolution imaging methods and “high throughput” technologies in contemporary research practice in biochemistry and molecular biology. Molecular mechanisms of diseases and also news about viruses, microbes and parasites are not missing among presented and discussed topics.

After nearly a decade, we have again chosen the pleasant environment of the National Library of Technology in Prague for the congress with the necessary conference facilities, in the vicinity of Prague Castle and other sights and charming places in Prague. With the congress, we would like to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the original Czechoslovak Biochemical Society, recall its origins and discuss the current challenges of contemporary research in molecular life sciences.
