Physics 1: Mechanics

Physics 1: Mechanics brings together advanced problem solvers to explore key concepts in physics. Experienced instructors guide students to creatively solve problems in kinematics, forces, Newton's laws, Newtonian gravity, fluid statics and dynamics, and more. Course materials include handouts and homework sets. Instructions for optional at-home lab activities will also be provided. While "test preparation" is not the main focus, this course is approved by the College Board as an AP Physics 1 class for students in grades 9-12 and students who complete this course are well prepared for all topics on the AP Physics 1 exam.

Who Should Take?

This course is intended for students who are interested in learning mechanics and Newton's laws. It covers the material on the AP Physics 1 exam, and is suitable for students interested in taking that exam. Students who have completed a typical algebra sequence or our Introduction to Algebra A and B courses are ready for Physics 1: Mechanics. This course does not require previous physics experience, though we recommend Introduction to Physics for students looking to build their foundation in physics thinking.

I have loved every Art of Problem Solving course I have ever taken, but this one may have been my favorite of all. Every week, I learned many new concepts, and Counting & Probability turned from my least favorite area of math to one of my favorites. The instructor was very knowledgeable and helpful. I look forward to taking more Art of Problem Solving classes in the future!
